Memorial Day 2009

Being the old goat that I am, I saved my thoughts for the real Memorial Day. This politically correct bullshit about having so many special days ruined just to give people a long weekend may be fine for many people, but I want to observe things when they should be observed.

Memorial Day is such a special day in my heart that I can not belittle it by caving in to the fad of the day. I have to many family members and friends who deserve more than that. May 30th is the proper day to sit quietly and reflect on just what it means to have been blessed with so many great Americans in our past and our present, and God willing in our future. Men and women ready willing and able to put everything, including their dying breath on the line for America. Many of us in the blogosphere have put in our time and took the gamble of not coming home and I just think it is right to take the time, the proper time to truely give thanks to our comrades who weren't so lucky. God bless every one of them.

Probably, without a doubt, the thing in this world I am most proud, aside from my family, is having my name etched on the veterans monument in Gorham, New Hampshire. I share this honor with hundreds of others from Gorham who have served in wartime. There are over a dozen other names listed who are close relatives of mine and just as many friends. I feel very honored indeed to keep such company.

This is THE ONLY post of this kind I can find AA, and I after reading it am pissed I neglected to do the same but won't now as it would only copy your original tribute here that millions of soldiers would be grateful to see and read..

Angel, thanks and I hope yours was great also!

Ray, thanks for the kudos. I was there, so I know just how it feels and I know what it means to me. America has lost many a good soldier over the years and we owe them more than we will EVER be able to pay. The least we can do is pay tribute like we actually mean it.

MK, thanks for your continued support my friend from "down under!" You show more patriotism towards America than many Americans do. Thank you for that also.

PCC, and my face is red now too. Thank you.

Brooke, thank you also, I'm glad you liked it.

I'm with Pasadena...I always tell you there's nothing AVERAGE about your love of America and your having fought for your country.
I didn't even know Memorial Day wasn't a weekend holiday..how bad is THAT? I know, there are some who think Memorial Day is synonymous with White Sales, ..THAT is REALLY bad.
God bless, Average... be well. xxx

Thank you for your service Joe and for this excellent post.

Something I read the other day about our Veterans is that the meaning of Veteran is "someone who writes a check to the United States of America for the amount up to and including ones life" and Memorial Day is to honor those who did pay the ultimate price. You are so right that they deserve better than an excuse for a three day weekend.

Thanks again for a great post!

Z, Beth, Angel, thank you all so much for the kind of words. You know, some of you sure have a knack for making me blush.

Nice Memorial Day post, AA!

I don't mind people around me enjoying family time; but I so want to be sure they understand and appreciate why they are privileged to enjoy such happiness and freedoms. It's because of others of us out there fighting and sacrificing on our behalves.
