What is FREEDOM OF SPEECH?

I checked a lot of dictionaries on the internet for the definition of "speech" and this is the longest I was able to find:
Websters Dictionary of the English Language 1828
Speech
SPEECH, noun
1. The faculty of uttering articulate sounds or words, as in human beings; the faculty of expressing thoughts by words or articulate sounds. speech was given to man by his Creator for the noblest purposes.
2. Language; words as expressing ideas. The acts of God to human ears cannot without process of speech be told.
3. A particular language, as distinct form others. Psalms 19:2.
4. That which is spoken; words uttered in connection and expressing thoughts. You smile at my speech
5. Talk; mention; common saying. The duke did of me demand, what was the speech among the londoners concerning the French journey.
6. Formal discourse in public; oration; harangue. The member has made his first speech in the legislature.
7. Any declaration of thoughts. I, with leave of speech implor'd, repli'd.
SPEECH, verb intransitive To make a speech; to harangue. [Little used.]
Wow, WEIRD! Not a single reference to kneeling or shitting on our flag or anything even remotely to do with all the shit that's been going on lately. I guess that when our founding fathers said we had the right to "free speech", they must have meant the vocal or written forms. The Supreme Court really screwed up when they added a bunch of new meanings. Our founding fathers did NOT include all the crap that we have to put up with today. Time for the SCOTUS to FIX their mistake!!

Seems everyone has their own interpretation of constitutional meaning. Jefferson
thought of it as a living document, open to interpretive change as generations progressed. Many others are strict constructionists: the constitution as written
in terms of its words at that time. Or not: consider the recent massacre in Las Vegas- the killer on the 32nd floor would have had to be a member of the militia
and possess only a muzzle loader. As the constitutional writers had no way of knowing that there would be a National Anthem, know way of knowing that evolving
tradition would require to stand at attention, hand over heart, they could not
directly address the problems of protesters..even though those founders were protesters themselves in a major way. So we ponder speech. Is it writing, TV,
movies, signs, internet...or simple oral sound?

BB, I suppose all of your points have some validity, but I still see NO speech in actions such as burning our flag, shitting or pissing on our flag, or "taking a knee"! I guess being shot at so many times gave me an intense disgust for such crap!

Z, I'll be over in a minute!

Both of you, thanks for dropping by!

Yes AA, it is disgusting. IMO probably to the extent that it is self-defeating
for the players. As such, I'd expect it to peter out except for all the arguing.
Agreed getting shot at many times gives emphasis to your feelings...and thank you for your service to our country. Many, probably most of us, were in the military
and never saw combat and frankly it is embarrassing to be thanked for something like that, even though we consider ourselves part of that brotherhood. At my advanced age, I knew and worked with several WWII vets and find their combat
experiences both similar and different. For example, they would be pulled off the
line after a couple weeks for R&R, there were definite front lines and it was easy to tell friend from foe. VN (I assume that was your experience) was a nightmare of
constant patrols, always on alert, sudden firefights and a fading support at home.
So, thank you sir.

BB, "it is embarrassing to be thanked for something like that", you should never feel less deserving of thanks than those of us that went into combat. You served your time and would have gone had you been asked. THAT is why you deserve as much thanks as anyone. The same reasoning is why I give as much as I can to DAV. I came home in one piece, others did not. "THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I!!!!"
